Status Update

QPL Central Library is outdated and undersized for its role in meeting the needs of the community and serving as the administrative hub for the system. The CPSD study explored the potential modernization, expansion, and renovation of the building without interruption to service. The study is complete and QPL is reviewing next steps for this much-needed project.

Statement from Source Document / POA

The Queens Public Library will move forward with a complete assessment to determine the capital scope to modernize and expand the Queens Central Library building. This assessment will continue as a partnership between QPL and DDC as a DDC managed Capital Project Scope Development (CPSD) initiative to detail the capital improvements needed to meet project goals and culminate in a report. The goals of the CPSD include exploring feasibility for future development of the library space including an expansion over the Children’s Library Discovery Center, modernizing building systems, and renovating the façade and roofs. To maintain uninterrupted operation, this could result in a multi-phased capital project impacting 250,000 square feet.

Funding: $1.15 million
