DEP assessed the feasibility and received Water Board approval to transfer the site. DEP and Parks are working on next steps in transferring the site.
Statement from Source Document / POA
New open space opportunities are extremely rare to come by in this portion of the study area. This currently vacant land at 87-74 Chevy Chase Street was previously used by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection as a groundwater well station and has enormous potential to become a brand-new park to serve existing and new residents along Hillside Avenue. Creation of this new open space at this site could close a walk to a park gap, bringing existing and new residents within walking distance of a park for the first time.
In support of an open space project here, NYC DEP will assess the feasibility of transferring the space to Parks. Contingent on this feasibility confirmation, DEP will bring this project to the NYC Water Board to request a transfer of jurisdiction from DEP to Parks. If approval is granted by the Water Board and the water and wastewater system’s consulting engineer, and the property is subsequently transferred to Parks, Parks will then work to identify capital funding for an open space project on site, unlocking the property for public use and enjoyment.
Funding: $75 to 100 thousand for DEP well capping
