Statement from Source Document / POA
Trees are important community resources, providing a variety of benefits in an urban setting including improvements to mental and physical health, mitigation of the urban heat island effect and stormwater retention. NYC Parks’ Neighborhood Tree Planting Program seeks to plant trees in every available street tree location, working neighborhood by neighborhood to reach the entire city. As a heat vulnerable neighborhood, NYC Parks prioritized Jamaica for new street tree plantings, resulting in 4,234 new trees being planted in the study area since 2015. In the coming years NYC Parks anticipates planting up to 600 trees in the study area, pending site surveys and analysis of subsurface conditions on a site-by-site basis.
