Statement from Source Document / POA

Merrick Boulevard is a key north–south corridor that connects surrounding neighborhoods with Jamaica Center. It serves many people, including seniors from the Allen Senior Residences, bus riders from the many routes along the boulevard, students from Eagle Academy, and residents who visit its parks and shops.

Beginning at Liberty Avenue and continuing south to the intersection with Linden Boulevard, DOT will ensure sidewalks and medians are brought up to a state of good repair. The median will be repaired, and accessible median tips will be added wherever feasible to shorten pedestrian crossings. Additionally, landscaping will be replaced or added on the median, wherever feasible. Sidewalks in poor condition will be replaced, and accessibility treatments will be added at all intersections. Finally, DOT will work to upgrade lighting along the boulevard with the goal of making necessary improvements or replacements to ensure a well-lit corridor and adding distinctive light fixtures that can strengthen the identity of the Boulevard.

This project will also make geometric improvements at key locations within the corridor. DOT identified targeted intersections that include major cross-streets, institutions such as schools or senior centers, and highly utilized bus stops. At these locations, DOT will install bus bulbs and curb extensions, which extend line-of-sight, provide safe and comfortable waiting areas, and shorten intersections for faster pedestrian crossings. DOT will work with NYC Parks to reconstruct Proctor Hopson Circle within this corridor with improvements such as new sidewalks, seating, game tables, and landscaping.
