Statement from Source Document / POA

At the heart of Downtown Jamaica, 165th Street is a unique pedestrian street between Jamaica Avenue to the south and 89th Avenue to the north, lined with retail and has a distinctive red brick paved surface. Recent efforts by DOT and the Downtown Jamaica Partnership (Jamaica BID) have started to formalize this block as a shared street, allowing pedestrians to move freely while limiting car access for deliveries only. The BID has also helped activate the space through placemaking activities. To build on these efforts, DOT will reconstruct this block of 165th Street as a shared street, repairing the red brick paving surface. The design will preserve business delivery access and prioritize pedestrian use, especially during peak retail hours.

Additionally, DEP expects to invest in water and sewer investments along the street with the goal of installing new sanitary sewers and to upgrade the water main to ensure continued service reliability and system integrity.

Funding: $10 million DOT, $3 million DEP
