Statement from Source Document / POA
In order to create a comfortable waiting area at the nation’s busiest rail-to-bus transfer, serving thousands of daily commuters, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) will remove the aging and hard-to-maintain existing Archer Avenue Bus Terminal canopy structure. This work will include deconstructing the canopy top and support stanchions. Eliminating this structure will allow a clean slate for DOT to transform the site and drastically improve the streetscape and waiting conditions for bus riders on Archer Ave.
Once the existing canopy is removed, DOT will install JCDecaux bus shelters that best fit the site needs and constraints. DOT will also look at options for additional wayfinding, and street furniture treatments including city benches and leaning bars to increase the amenities available to bus riders and create a consistent, legible and safe public realm on Archer Ave.
Throughout this process, including before the canopy comes down, DOT will work with the MTA, Community Board and Council Member to engage the public to ensure that the siting and design that is being proposed meets the needs of the community and riders alike.
Funding: $5 million to remove canopy, $750 thousand for bus shelters
